Our smart devices cannot be over stressed
how much power they consume on the average, one minute they are all charged and
the next it’s like…WTH!!!
We’ve been there and it does drive us
all crazy admittedly so what really is going on with our devices and how do we
manage this issue.
We stumbled upon a number of articles
giving advice on how to manage charge time for our devices and we have got to
share it. We took the liberty of dumbing down the details but if you’re all
into the geeky explanation of things, then do follow the links after.
To better manage battery life of your
device, follow these;
-
Don’t leave charging overnight or for long
periods, more recent smart devices come with auto regulators for when the
device is fully charged and all but its better safe than sorry due to
overcharging having the potential to overheat the battery and inevitably damage
it over a short time…in some cases, combust. (Catch fire, explode…etc).
-
If you must charge overnight, remove device
protective case to allow proper heat dissipation.
-
Always make use of official charging devices
from the manufacturers as they have already been tuned to effectively charge
the device automatically taking note of power needs and overcharge time. (Stop
borrowing bb charger to charge everything with micro USB port, haba).
-
Do not let device drain to 0% frequently and then
charge to 100%, each device has a number of complete charge cycles their battery
can handle, reach it too quickly and that’s the end of its efficiency. It will
frustratingly loose its ability to hold charge.
-
Your device does not need to be fully charged,
as doing so stresses the battery and reduces battery life (…at full charge, it
reaches a high voltage threshold which constantly reaching will hamper its
productivity due to stress caused on the battery). Let your devices always be
charged between 50-80%, this is the most efficient state for the battery.
-
Somewhat difficult but should be practiced,
turn off your device before charging as leaving them active while charging
complicates the process by sending fluctuating signals to your charger
regarding its current power levels and thus confuses the charger and it is supply
to your device. (We think since most of us are all hands-on with our devices so
it is best not to use them while charging and should you have to, unplug it and
plug back when done).
-
If your device needs to be kept away for a
period (…say you’re travelling without it), have it charged half way before
turning it off and keeping away. The stored power will drain gradually but will
keep the ions active during the away periods.
It should be noted that your laptop,
tablet and phones all apply to this and should hence forth be managed properly.
Not forgetting any other battery powered device you have (…lamps, flashlights
etc) as they work on very similar principles.
There’s always the IDC (I Don’t Care)
way of managing your devices too, like doing as you please and making a purchase
should any inconveniences come up. We can only say, neither is ok…oops! Either is
fine.
Here are the links for the geeks out
there, enjoy.
