WINDOWS 9, NO ER…10.

When Windows introduced the 8 to succeed the 7 it was incredible news to Windows users and the dynamic change in the UI (user interface) was, well…eeer, beautiful but a bit difficult to grasp. With time though most users got around the UI and with the release of Windows 8.1 bringing back familiar patterns from 7, it was a sigh of relief for all (we were quite relieved about the improvements).

Moving on, Microsoft has announced the release of Windows 10 which begets the question, “what happened to 9?” Not that it really matters though but it does pique our curiosity.
The new Windows 10 is set to bring a number of interesting and functional improvements over the former.
Here is a quick outline of what to expect;
- A familiar Start menu (a blend of Windows 7 and 8).

- All apps will run in a window allowing you to minimize, expand or close.

- Quadrant snap layout, yes now you can snap up to 4 apps simultaneously on your desktop.

- New task view button allowing you to view and close all open apps.

- Real-time multiple desktops allowing you to work and resume where you left off on each.

- Improved File Explorer which will display your recent accessed files and frequently visited folders on start.

“Windows 10 will run across an incredibly broad set of devices – from the Internet of Things, to servers in enterprise datacenters worldwide. Some of these devices have 4 inch screens – some have 80 inch screens – and some don’t have screens at all. Some of these devices you hold in your hand, others are ten feet away. Some of these devices you primarily use touch/pen, others mouse/keyboard, others controller/gesture – and some devices can switch between input types.
We’re not talking about one UI to rule them all – we’re talking about one product family, with a tailored experience for each device.”

Verdict: we like the new improvements coming in the Windows 10 and are looking forward to fully experiencing it. As a Windows user we can tell this release will improve productivity quite well and it being a free upgrade (so far seems legit) from Windows 8/8.1 only makes upgrading even better.
It is too early to say well done Windows until the customers have sang, let’s hope this isn’t another Vista in camouflage.
